Recently I've been participating in some postcard exchanges. They are fun, and a good way to try out new techniques. They are small so the fear of "messing up" is gone, and I can really push my creative edge with them.

I've been working on a series about colorful buildings. Of course, at first I thought of "far-away" lands, other cultures, etc. Then I thought "why not do ones that I know personally", that are right in my own backyard? When I started looking around I was amazed at the possiblilties!

After I chose my subject and started the creative process, I went back to visit the building. I realized that I had a much deeper appreciation for, and understanding of, the building. I could idenfity with each little part of it!

That reminded me of a time when I was in high school art class and we did some plein air work. After that experience I never again saw clouds, trees, or the landscape in the same way. I saw so many nuances, so many more details and subtle colors, some special quality that I hadn't noticed before. It's like I slowed down the movie and analyzed it in slow motion! It's surprising how much I miss seeing when I don't take the time to really look!

I think it works the same way with people. When I take the time to really look, to get to know someone, it's surprizing how much more I appreciate them. I don't mean that it makes me like everyone, but I have a better understanding about "what makes them tick".

I don't like every subject that is available for my art - some are just to mean and cruel for me to spend time focusing on. But there is still a message to be learned. I still want to see the details, even if I decide not to dwell on them. That is what keeps my work fresh and meaningful to me. Everything is part of the life I live, whether I see it or not! I want to at least make a conscious choice on what I choose to use. My art helps me to slow down and really SEE those things around me. My art helps me to understand my life - if that makes sense!

So - Slow down and smell the roses - Life is to short to miss those things that are right under our noses!
